Chapter Ten

“Let’s start with the security automation for the doors at night,” Mr. Moore said. “It’s easy to do and will take about an hour to install and test. We’ll show you how to program it, Jenna, so you can change the time for lock and unlock whenever you like. There’s a key for manual override in case of a power failure.”

Ethan frowned. “You have a whole house generator. Is that being maintained and run regularly?”

Jenna furrowed her brow. “I didn’t know we had a generator, so the answer is probably not.”

“That worthless so-called gardener was responsible for the generator. He always said it was fine, but I never saw him touch it,” Darlene said.

“I’ll look at it today,” Ethan said.

Jenna exhaled. “We’ve been lucky we haven’t needed it.”

Her eyes welled, and she chewed on her lip. I get so irritated with myself because there are so many things I don’t know, but I feel like I should.

Ethan touched Jenna’s arm lightly as Shane walked in. The intense heat from his hand startled her, but before she could pull away, its warmth calmed her frustration.

“You’re doing the best you can, Jenna. Don’t be hard on yourself,” Ethan said.

Shane wiggled his eyebrows at Jenna, and she rolled her eyes.

“That’s right, Boss Lady; that’s what Ethan and I are for.” Darlene’s eyes crinkled with her soft smile.

“Do we want to go over the sketch for Jenna’s office now or later?” Shane asked.

“Let’s review the sketch so you can get back to the barn, Shane,” Jenna said.

“I don’t mind having a break,” Shane said.

Jenna raised her eyebrows at Shane, and he cleared his throat.

Mr. Moore said, “Before we get too far away from the security system, I’d like to talk about the fire alarm system because it’s included. The automated system will alert you when an alarm is activated. It’s been my experience newly installed systems have false positive alerts more frequently with the fire alarm than with the security. My preference is to install the system with the security alerts activated. After a month, we can turn on the fire alarm notifications, so we’re implementing only one major feature at a time.”

“I like that,” Jenna said.

Mr. Moore smiled. “Bobbie told me you would because it’s project management 101, isn’t it? Okay, Shane. Let’s see your sketch.”

Shane unfurled the sketch on the counter and pointed with a pencil. “The guestroom is the same size as the other two downstairs guestrooms with ensuite bathrooms. The bathroom is slightly smaller, but no one would notice. Jenna, the storage room for your office is the same size as the guest bathroom, but it could easily be converted to a smaller storage room with a private restroom for you.”

He lightly drew a line. “We’d divide it about here. Your office would be large enough for the file cabinet, but we’d replace the large desk with a smaller desk that would be more useful for you.”

“I think you should have a private restroom, Jenna. I don’t think you’d use half the space of the storage closet,” Darlene said.
